Taper notes: Yet another entry into my New Orleans Jazzfest Appreciation series -- BARN44 is a Bela Fleck & The Flecktones set, opening for String Cheese Incident at The Saenger Theater in New Orleans. For anyone who never made it to the Saenger, it was a spectacularly beautiful small theater with general admissions seating, great sound and stars painted on the roof. Unfortunately it has been since torn down. If I recall correctly I initially started setting up in the balcony at this show, but Bill "The Genius" Mulvey convinced me to relocate to a better position. And I'm glad I did, since this is a really spectacular sounding recording. I challenge you to find a better quality Flecktones recording out there! Anyway, due to my last-minute move, it seems as if I missed a second or 2 of the first song.... The Flecktones got a good amount of time for an opener (or was it more of a co-headliner) -- an hour and 40 minutes....not bad. It's a nice set from them, even if they don't get to stretch out tremendously. No guests in this set, though the Flecktones sat in with String Cheese during their set later on. (The String Cheese set from this night was possibly the best SCI set I have ever seen....) Look for more Jazzfest sets coming your way soon.... Enjoy!
