The lyrics, written by Vic & Futureman's brother Joseph, have been around since at least 1990. In fall of 1990, the Flecktone Rap was extended to include the lyrics. The extended Flecktone Rap was played this way until the Flecktones recorded the album version of the Message in early 1993.

After recording the album version, the Flecktone Rap was retired and The Message was played going forward in it's current form.

Throughout the years, The Message has been a staple for the Flecktones. Played with all different lineups, it often shows up when the Flecktones have guests joining them. One such version with multiple guests was released on the live album, Live Art.

For a brief period in the mid 1990's the lyrics were even interpolated into Sex in a Pan creating a "Message in a Pan" mash-up.
